UNA members have been constantly committed in this sector, improving access and utilisation to safe water and sanitation services in rural and urban areas, primarily for human consumption and for livestock as well, through the increased availability of unexploited ground water sources; and the empowerment of communities / authorities to manage the resources in a sustainable way.
An Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) framework is usually set up from the earlier stages through detailed hydro-geological, geological and geo-physical studies, livestock and environment studies and needs evaluation that are the base for activities design, planning and monitoring.
Local actors such as the beneficiary communities and local authorities are also actively involved in all stages of the project cycle in order to guarantee adequacy and sustainability of the new infrastructures.
The current projects, aim to improve access to water sources both in rural and urban areas, through drilling of new boreholes in unexploited aquifers, improving management (setting up the first computerised billing and accounting system for Hargeisa Water Agency) and infrastructures of existing Water Supply Systems, and capacity building for Ministry of Water and Mineral resources in Somaliland.
