PROJECTS : WATER AND SANITATION

OVERVIEW

UNA members have been constantly committed in this sector, improving access and utilisation to safe water and sanitation services in rural and urban areas, for human consumption as well as for livestock, through increasing the availability of unexploited ground water sources; and the empowerment of communities / authorities to manage the resources in a sustainable way.

An Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) framework is usually set up from the earlier stages through detailed hydro-geological, geological and geo-physical studies, livestock and environment studies, and needs evolutions that are the base for activities design, planning and monitoring.

Local actors such as the beneficiary communities and local authorities are also actively involved in all stages of the project cycle in order to guarantee adequacy and sustainability of the new infrastructures.

The current project adopts a rather holistic approach merging different components to achieve a fully comprehensive outcome. Delivery of social services aims to improve rural and urban livelihoods (health, water and sanitation, infrastructures in roads and buildings).
In particular, to upgrade existing water resources and to provide accessible safe and adequate water in the project area, CESVI undertakes the co-ordination of the water & sanitation component: identifying suitable water sources, rehabilitating water points, establishing sanitation facilities at school/health centres/communication and market centres, supporting local administration and community based water source management structures.

Two are the main contribution of CESVI for the project. First, the carrying out of a exhaustive and complete geophysical study of the region, which was never done before. Secondly, the construction of a sanitation system (latrines) is implemented taking into account environmental features and cultural habits. Thus, particular attention is drawn on creating awareness on hygiene & sanitation through training and workshops, and on enhancing community building.
