PROJECTS : LIVESTOCK

OVERVIEW

It is well known that in all areas of Somalia, the main food economy groups have livestock as a primary resource – goats, sheep and camel-. Indeed, nomadic pastoral livestock production, which has the advantage of being adapted to harsh, dry and unpredictable environment conditions, has long been practised in Somalia, and is the most widespread animal production system in the country.

In addition to it, being subsistence oriented in many areas, it also plays a significant commercial role, with livestock trade forming the basis of the Somali economy. The livestock export sector contributes 80% towards the country’s foreign currency earnings, creates over 60% of the employment opportunities and comprises approximately 40% of the gross domestic product.

Thus, UNA has a long history of interventions in this crucial sector, through collaborating with local vets and pastoralists in improving production and trade of breeding products. UNA is also committed with capacity building of Local Authorities in delivery and regulation of veterinary services.

The current project
has the overall objective to ensure that Somali livestock producers, traders and exporters have access to efficient and effective veterinary services in order to improve livestock production, animal welfare and quality of products of animal origin; increase animal off-take; and sustain exports.
